Freedom Address

Twelve score and ten years ago our founding fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created free. Now we are engaged in a national bankruptcy debate, testing whether that nation, or any nation so tax enslaved and so bankrupt, can long endure. We are met in a great contest of that debate. We have come to decide in that great debate of that contest in a final affirmation of those who gave their voices that the people may live free from tyranny.

It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. Our founding fathers and patriots, living and dead, who have struggled for our freedom have consecrated it, far above our power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what we will do here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work of freedom which they have so nobly advanced.

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great monetary task before us, that from our founding fathers we take increased devotion to that cause of freedom for which they gave their full measure of devotion, that we here highly resolve that our founding fathers shall not have lived in vain, that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of tax freedom and national solvency and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
